What’s a web app?

A web app is either an educational web site or a course listed in the directory of Class Portal.

A web app listed in Class Portal consists of various resources, including icons, screenshots, descriptions, relevant keywords, and web links to the web site on Internet. These resources are provided by publishers which created from Publisher Connect. The copyright of these resources goes to its own publisher.

Web apps life cycle

The figure below illustrates the life cycle of a web app.

When a publisher adds a new web app, its life cycle begins.

After the app editing is done and submitted, it will be of state “Waiting for review”. In this state, this web app will not get listed in Class Portal and invisible to Puffin Academy users.

Within 2~3 working days, Puffin Academy staff will review the submitted web app(s), and keep you informed about the feedback. Once the review passed, a notification mail will be sent to the registered IT contact mailbox about the approval. At the same time, web app state will be changed to “Published”. A “Published” web app will be listed in Class Portal and visible to Puffin Academy users.

If the review is negative, the web app will be changed to “Rejected” state. The rejected app won’t be listed in Class Portal and it’s invisible to Puffin Academy users. A notification mail with short explanation will be sent to registered IT contact mailbox about the rejection. Publishers can re-edit the app and submit it for review again.

The life of a web app goes to the end upon deletion.

Publisher Connect uses different icons to indicate web apps of different states:

About “Whitelist Patterns”

While adding a new web app, a very important input is “Whitelist Patterns”.

Puffin Academy uses whitelist to control which pages on Internet are accessible to kids. Publishers have to provide complete and correct “Whitelist Patterns” of the new web app in order to make it accessible. A typo in app name or description may not be an issue for users to use your app. But, unlike other inputs, even a small typo in “Whitelist Patterns” may get your web app blocked unexpectedly.

The “Whitelist Patterns” is a list of content-filtering rules to describe what URL address your app should be allowed to access.  Please refer to the “help” link for details.

Submit web apps for review

At the end of adding a new web app, by clicking the button, your web app enters the state of “Waiting for review”.

In the web app list, you can also select multiple web apps (1) and submit them for review (2). The figure listed illustrates the 2-step actions. It’s especially useful when more than one rejected apps are fixed and ready for review again.

Please be aware that upon the done editing of a web app, its state switches to “Waiting for review” immediately, no matter what its original state is.

The content edited is a shadow copy of the web app. It means if a web app is previously in “Published” state, the editing will change its state to “Waiting for review” but changes made by the editing will not visible to Puffin Academy users.

The changes made by the editing will be only visible to Puffin Academy users when the web app passes the review. When passing the review, its state changes from “Waiting for review” to “Published” again.
